At Phoenix our 747 landed and everybody had to leave the plane in order to have a short chat with the US immigration officers. After immigration we had to carry our baggage past the customs officers and then were finally allowed to re-checking the baggage and to go back onto the plane.
Now, while this may sound like a tedious procedure, the good thing was that there was no immigration control or anything once we Landed in San Diego.
