Tobi Oetiker's Projects

I work as an IT-Specialist for OETIKER+PARTNER AG a consultancy company based in Olten.

Below you find a list of programs and documents I created. All the things provided on this page are available under the Gnu GPL unless stated otherwise. If my tools make you successful, checkout my wishlist.

du2rrd - diskspace monitoring delux
My latest brainchild and first AJAX application provides a nice graphical view on du output, with a longterm perspective thanks to rrdtool. If you run a large fileserver with many users, this may be just the thing for you!
O+P Insights
Together with my colleagues at OETIKER+PARTNER I have started a website where we document the things we have figured out. Some pretty interesting stuff I think.
SmokePing
My "MRTG for Network Latency". This RRDtool based application monitors network latency and presents its findings on the web. It's fast, modular and highly configurable.
RRDtool: Round Robin Database Tool
Looking for a data logging and graphing database capable of logging more than 1500 float values a second while aggregating them while the database file does not grow over time? Check out RRDtool.
mrtg: Multi Router Traffic Grapher
Do you want to know how much traffic is going through your routers? Then MRTG is for you. See what it can do and read all about it.
Real Men don't Click
Tobi and his friends do Windows ... Can you imagine? Well, go have a look!
Gedafe: The Generic Database Frontend
Together with David Schweikert I have developed to system to bring complex database applications onto the web without any frontend programming. Check it out!
SEPP Software Packaging and Sharing System
Have you ever dreamed of a system which lets you install, hundreds of software packages on your cluster, several versions of the same product, all available concurrently to the users, fully documented and highly flexible, which the ability to share with other system mangers who run their own shop. Stop searching, you have found it. I have developed SEPP for the Department of Electrical Engineering of the ETHZ, to do exactly this. A presentation about SEPP has been given at LISA'98 in Boston.
DATEBOOK Repair Center
This little script will help you to repair your palm pilot datebook.dat file if it starts crashing hotsync when ever you want to update your pilot. This program is hosted with OETIKER+PARTNER AG, the other company I work for. There was an article on dtbrc in an acm journal in June 2002.
ETH Standards for Responsibility and System Management
In 2002 I helped to write a proposal for a new security standard. Around the time of the SQL slammer attack it got official sanction and is now binding for all people who connect systems to the ETH network.
Template Tree II
A Post Installation Config Tool. I did a presentation on TemplateTree @ LISA 2001, read it here.
SAMFS Support for Samba
We run Suns excellent SAMFS HSM system on our backup server. This patch teaches Samba about SAMFS offline files.
The not so Short Introduction to LaTeX2e
From this document you will learn all you need to know about LaTeX. It will enable you to write your documents with this great tool. You will even learn what LaTeX is, in case you don't have a clue. If you don't have a working LaTeX installation, you can download one of the PostScript files. Check the README file to find the one which fits your needs. Obviously you can also have the source code of this document. If you want a closer copy, check out your next CTAN (UK, US, Germany) server.
